Veterinarian
Dr. Melissa Mez has been practicing veterinary medicine since 2005. She grew up in Michigan and attended the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, earning a Bachelors in Science in Zoology in 2001. She earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 at Ross University and Texas A&M and then practiced for two years in Ohio before relocating to the Black Hills in 2007.
Dr. Mez has been at the Black Hills Animal Hospital since 2007, practicing small animal medicine and surgery. She has a special interest in Internal Medicine and loves dermatology, oncology, and geriatric medicine. She and her husband (an equine surgeon) have four boys and you'll often find their family on a baseball diamond or wrestling mat outside of the clinic! They have 3 dogs, 1 cat, 9 chickens, 2 ducks, 1 rabbit, 2 PacMan frogs, and several horses.
Receptionist
Stacey has worked as a kennel attendant for 5 years and a part-time receptionist for 2 years. She loves creating a bond with the dogs and cats who board with us. She loves hiking and exploring the Black Hills with her husband and dogs. She has two dogs, a rescue from Oglala Pet Project named Finn, and a German Shepherd named Seidr.
Registered Veterinary Technician
Nicole has worked as a veterinary technician for the last 15 years. Thirteen of those years have been spent here at Black Hills Animal Hospital. She loves most areas of the job and is interested in animal behavior and training.
She has 4 cats, Mitch, Groot, Marceline, and Porkchop. Two dogs, Freddie and Royce. Four chickens, LSP, Skips, Polly, and Ada. At any given time, she will have extras in her home because she often fosters neonatal kittens and puppies through Oglala Pet Project. Of her six four-legged friends, four are foster failures.
She has two boys who love animals as much as she does and their free time is spent hiking in the hills and gardening.
Registered Veterinary Technician
Jena is a registered veterinary technician and has been at Black Hills Animal Hospital since 2014. She has lived in the Black Hills area her entire life and has started her own family here with her husband, Sean. They stay very busy outside of work with two boys, Dax and Theo. Their family also includes two dogs, Billy and Jack.

Being in animal care and medicine is very important to her. She loves caring for patients and talking to their families. Her favorite part of her job is taking care of patients before, during, and after surgery.
Veterinary Assistant
Yamily Orozco joined Black Hills Animal Hospital this year and is a certified veterinary assistant. She received her certification from PIMA in El Paso, TX. She loves horses and dogs. Her favorite part of the job is caring for puppies and helping with their preventative care. She loves helping them get off to the best start with their families!
Yamily is happily married to a veterinarian. They have 3 dogs Janka (a French poodle, 13 years), Maggy (Golden Retriever/Shar-Pei, 8 years), Gina (Husky, 1 year), a guinea pig named Juliet (5 yrs), and 2 turtles (the ninja turtles)!
